NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University freshman
Hasan Hammad was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week on Monday. The announcement was made as the Captains were preparing for a Tuesday night road game at Kean University in Union, New Jersey.
Hammad, from Haymarket, Va., posted his first career double-double and led the 12th-ranked Captains to a 2-1 record last week. He scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds versus Virginia Wesleyan in a 74-68 loss at the Freeman Center on Thursday, and then tallied a career-high 19 points and brought down seven boards in a road victory Sunday at Wilson College, 69-48. Hammad has moved into the CNU starting lineup and played a season-high 33 minutes in the Wilson win, and is now averaging 8.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game this season.
The Captains, now 8-3, will take on the Cougars of Kean for the first time ever on Tuesday night at Harwood Arena in Union, N.J. Kean is 6-5 on the season and has dropped its last two games. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m. The road battle will be the fourth game in a nine-day stretch for
John Krikorian's squad.
