NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University puts its four-game winning streak on the line Saturday, as the 10th-ranked Captains travel to Staunton, Va., to take on the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin University. The game will be the first-ever of the programs, and is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. tipoff.
John Krikorian's squad is coming off back-to-back victories last weekend in the Holiday Inn/CNU Invitational at the Freeman Center. The Captains, now 5-2, defeated Buffalo State University on Saturday, 90-54, and then held off Rowan University on Sunday, 83-73. Senior All-American
Trey Barber led the way for the Captains, posting his second double-double of the season on Sunday by scoring 22 points and pulling down 17 rebounds vs. the Profs. He had posted 17 points and seven boards the day before in just 20 minutes of playing time against the Bengals. For his efforts, Barber was selected the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week.
Mary Baldwin enters play on Saturday with a 2-3 record, and the Squirrels have lost three of their last four. The young program, which began play in the 2020-21 season, has been built by Head Coach Matt Griggs, and produced a winning record last year of 14-12. The Fighting Squirrels are a member of the USA South Athletic Conference. Â
Following Saturday's game, the Captains will have an eight-day break for final exams before returning to action on Monday, December 11th, vs. Averett University at the Freeman Center.
Captains action is broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with Saturday's pre-game show beginning at 2:40 p.m. The live broadcast can be heard online by clicking on the link provided at the top of this story.
