NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A busy weekend of basketball tips off Saturday at C.J. Woollum Court at the Freeman Center. It's the CNU/Holiday Inn Invitational, and begins at 2:00 p.m. with Rowan University taking on the University of Mary Washington. Christopher Newport University hosts the Bengals of Buffalo State University Saturday in the second game, which will tip off at approximately 4:00 p.m.
The Captains are 3-2 on the year, and won twice at home last week over Top 15 programs. CNU defeated 14th-ranked Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday night, and followed it up with a Saturday victory over 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins University. Buffalo State enters Saturday's action with an 0-4 record so far this season. It will be just the second meeting of the schools, with the first coming in January of 1988, a double-overtime win by the Captains at Ratcliffe Gymnasium.
John Krikorian's squad, National Champions a year ago and ranked first in the country in the pre-season, has been led by senior big man
Trey Barber, who's averaging a team-high 16.6 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Barber was named the Player of the Week last week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference and was also selected to the National Team of the Week by D3hoops.com.
Mary Washington is 3-1 and the Eagles are riding a three-game winning streak heading into the tourney. Rowan has a mark of 3-1 as well, and the Profs are coming off their first loss of the season Tuesday night at home to Stockton.
Tickets for Saturday's action will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office. Captains action is broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with Saturday's pre-game show beginning at approximately 3:40 p.m.
