NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport won both of the matches on their Saturday slate with victories over Swarthmore and Washington & Lee. In the latter match, a school record and two Freeman Center records fell in a five-set thriller.
Christopher Newport 3, Swarthmore 1 | (25-17, 25-17, 21-25, 28-26)
First Set
Four kills from
Macy Burk helped the Captains build a healthy lead in the early part of the first set. The Captains held a 18-10 lead, but Swarthmore cut that lead to just one after winning seven straight points. Christopher Newport struck back though and won seven straight points of their own led by two kills from
Samantha Dorn to take the first set.
Second Set
CNU grabbed nine of the first ten points in the second set with three kills from
Alyssa Dozier and two aces from
Sammy Carroll. The Captains held Swarthmore to a negative hitting percentage (-.023) as they held onto their lead throughout the set and five total kills from Dozier allowed CNU to take a two-set advantage in this match.
Third Set
The Captains fell behind early in the third set, but six straight points including back-to-back aces from
Megan James helped CNU retake a 9-8 lead. Swarthmore held a slim lead later in the third set, and a kill from
Kyla McIntyre and an ace from
Noelle Starr brought the Captains within two, but Swarthmore managed to win the final two points and extend the match.
Fourth Set
Christopher Newport jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the fourth set thanks to kills from Dozier and
Samantha Dorn. Swarthmore rallied to tie the set at 8, and continued their hot streak to take a three point lead.
Macy Burk and
Kyla McIntyre hit kills to bring CNU within one before Starr served an ace to tie the score at 14. A missed Swarthmore attack brought up the first match point at 24-23, but the Garnet scored two straight points and threatened a fifth set. Alyssa Dozer took control and hit a kill before serving an ace to win the match.
Christopher Newport 3, Washington & Lee 2 | (25-20, 27-25, 18-25, 22-25, 15-11)
First Set
Washington & Lee scored three points in a row to tie the first set at 20.
Macy Burk rose to the occasion and hit back-to-back kills and blocked one of three missed attacks from W&L to help CNU claim a first-set victory.
Second Set
The Captains trailed by three, but two kills from
Kyla McIntyre sparked a 4-0 run that gave CNU the lead in the second set.
Alyssa Dozier hit two kills after that to tie the score at 24. After the Captains missed a serve, they saw back-to-back-to-back kills from
Macy Burk,
Samantha Dorn, and
Noelle Starr to win the set and take a 2-0 lead.
Third Set
The Captains and Generals were neck and neck in the third set, but after W&L took five straight points, a tie score turned into a 21-16 lead for the Generals.The Captains couldn't come back from the late run and dropped their first set of the match.
Fourth Set
The Captains fell behind again in the fourth set as six straight points turned a CNU lead into a three-point advantage for W&L. This time, CNU recovered with back-to-back kills from
Kyla McIntyre and later, McIntyre teamed up with
Alyssa Dozier and
Alli Pratt to once again tie the score at 21. But Washington & Lee managed to find the final four points to force a fifth set.
Fifth Set
After losing the first point of the fifth set, the Captains responded by winning the next five in a row with kills from Dozier and McIntyre. McIntyre would hit two kills in a row before a
Sammy Carroll ace gave CNU an 8-2 lead. McIntyre had five kills in the fifth set, including the final two to win the match for Christopher Newport.

- Christopher Newport hit 73 kills in the win over Washington & Lee which is the most kills in a match since 2005. It's the third-most kills in a match in program history and the most since sets changed from 30 points to 25. Additionally, this is the most kills in a match in the history of the Freeman Center.
- Sammy Carroll assisted on 59 kills in the win over Washington & Lee, her second-highest total and the eighth-most in school history.
- Noelle Starr finished the match with 40 digs, which is the most digs in a match since 2011, is tied for the second-most digs in school history, and sets a Freeman Center record.
