Captains Sweep Saturday Action with Record-Breaking Performances

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport won both of the matches on their Saturday slate with victories over Swarthmore and Washington & Lee. In the latter match, a school record and two Freeman Center records fell in a five-set thriller.

Christopher Newport 3, Swarthmore 1 | (25-17, 25-17, 21-25, 28-26)

First Set

Four kills from Macy Burk helped the Captains build a healthy lead in the early part of the first set. The Captains held a 18-10 lead, but Swarthmore cut that lead to just one after winning seven straight points. Christopher Newport struck back though and won seven straight points of their own led by two kills from Samantha Dorn to take the first set.

Second Set

CNU grabbed nine of the first ten points in the second set with three kills from Alyssa Dozier and two aces from Sammy Carroll. The Captains held Swarthmore to a negative hitting percentage (-.023) as they held onto their lead throughout the set and five total kills from Dozier allowed CNU to take a two-set advantage in this match.

Third Set

The Captains fell behind early in the third set, but six straight points including back-to-back aces from Megan James helped CNU retake a 9-8 lead. Swarthmore held a slim lead later in the third set, and a kill from Kyla McIntyre and an ace from Noelle Starr brought the Captains within two, but Swarthmore managed to win the final two points and extend the match.

Fourth Set

Christopher Newport jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the fourth set thanks to kills from Dozier and Samantha Dorn. Swarthmore rallied to tie the set at 8, and continued their hot streak to take a three point lead. Macy Burk and Kyla McIntyre hit kills to bring CNU within one before Starr served an ace to tie the score at 14. A missed Swarthmore attack brought up the first match point at 24-23, but the Garnet scored two straight points and threatened a fifth set. Alyssa Dozer took control and hit a kill before serving an ace to win the match.
