No. 25 CNU Men's Soccer Picks Up Tenth Win of the Season With 2-1 Victory at Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Erasing a drought that has lasted six matchups and nearly 23 years, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Washington and Lee University (9-3-4) on Saturday afternoon. Playing in another hard-fought battle against the Generals, the 25th-ranked Captains scored once in each half to escape Lexington with the team's tenth win of the season and first ever on the road against W&L.

The Captains improved to 10-2-2 overall this season with the win and will close out the regular season next Saturday against No. 2 Mary Washington. CNU got goals from sophomore Caleb Jones in the first half and a winner in the second off the foot of Jason LaViola. Barry Jones added his team-leading seventh assist of the season in the win.

The back-and-forth matchup pivoted in favor of the Captains in the 16th minute when fifth-year senior Elton Quintanilla played a ball through for Caleb Jones in the left side of the box. Facing one defender, Jones managed to find enough space to whistle a left-footed laser off the post and into the goal for the score.

Despite plenty of action on both ends, the score remained 1-0 after the first 45 minutes ofa ction as Christopher Newport held a slim 5-4 advantage in total shots. Just 16 seconds into the second half, though, Washington and Lee drew a foul in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick to knot the game up at 1-1.

The match was tied until the 64th minute when a failed clearance by the Generals defense wound up at the feet of Barry Jones. He slipepd a nice pass to LaViola who quickly ripped a hard shot just inside the near post to put the Captains back on top. His first goal of the season and fourth career tally stood up as his first career game-winning goal while Jones has now assisted on four winners so far this season.

CNU took eight shots in the game, putting six on target, while being led by two apiece from LaViola, and Jones. Quintanilla added two total attempts with one on target.

Christopher Newport will return to the field in one week to make the return trip to Fredericksburg, Va. in the home-and-home series against the 2nd-ranked Eagles of Mary Washington. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm.
