FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- In the final game of the regular season, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at No. 2 Mary Washington (14-1-2) on a steamy October day. Playing on an unseasonably warm afternoon in Fredericksburg, the Captains fell to 10-3-2 overall after being shutout for just the second time this season.
Christopher Newport put seven of the team's 11 total shots on target, but the Mary Washington defense and goalkeeper were up to the task in their Homecoming performance. The Captains got four total attempts, including three on-frame, from senior forward
Elton Quintanilla. Junior midfielder
Jason LaViola also took a pair of shots, challenging the Eagles keeper with both.
Mary Washington scored one goal in either half to take a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute and add an insurance tally in the 58th minute. Josh Kirkland scored the first and assisted on Nelsar Castillo's second to wrap up the day's scoring.
Both goals were put in behind sophomore goalkeeper
Hayden Dewey despite another strong performance from the second-year player for the Captains. Dewey made six saves in the contest, marking the second most only to the 10 he had against the Eagles in the first matchup earlier this season.
Dom Stumpo came on to close out the final 16 minutes of the game and added two more saves for Christopher Newport.
The Captains were disciplined on Saturday, committing just three fouls.
The final game of the regular season locks in the Captains' seeding for next week's Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship. Seeding will be announced by the league once the remainder of the schedule is completed by the rest of the league, with play starting in Santa Cruz, California in Thursday's first round action. Semifinals will be played on Friday with the championship game set for Sunday, November 5.
