Captains Outlast Virginia Wesleyan in Five-Set Thriller

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Christopher Newport battled in a five-set match against Virginia Wesleyan and came away with the victory on Wednesday night .

First Set (Captains 25-23)

The Captains trailed by as many as seven points in the first set, but an eight-point run helped them find their way back into the lead. Simara Alexander and Macy Burk teamed up to hit five kills in the run and Noelle Starr served two aces. Two kills from Samantha Dorn helped finish the job as the Captains won the opening set.

Second Set (Virginia Wesleyan 25-16)

The Captains weren't able to get in a rhythm in the second set, while Virginia Wesleyan hit their best percentage of .345. The Marlins only held a four point lead before a run saw the lead swell to nine. The Captains couldn't keep pace and dropped the second set.

Third Set (Captains 25-23)

Six points in a row helped the Captains take a 12-8 lead in the third set. Macy Burk had six of her team-leading 14 kills in the third set with the final two helping the Captains bring up set point. The Marlins fought back and claimed four of five points, but Kyla McIntyre's kill wrapped up the third set in favor of Christopher Newport.

Fourth Set (Virginia Wesleyan 26-24)

CNU scored three points to take a 17-13 lead in a close fourth set. The Marlins scored the next three points to shrink the lead to just one. As the teams went back and forth over the next few points, Samantha Dorn and Alyssa Dozier helped keep the Captains level. With the score tied at 24, Virginia Wesleyan scored two points in a row to force a fifth set.

Fifth Set (Captains 15-10)

After Virginia Wesleyan scored three points in a row to take a 3-2 lead, the Captains claimed the next eight points in a row on their way to a 10-3 lead. Kyle McIntyre had three kills in the run while Alyssa Dozier added two more. Dozier would add two more kills and with two more kills from Simara Alexander, the Captains won the fifth set and the match.

News & Notes

  • Four Captains finished with double-digit kills. Macy Burk led the team with 14, Alyssa Dozier hit 13 kills, Kyla McIntyre added 11, and Samantha Dorn had 10.
  • Sammy Carroll led the Captains with 54 assists, her most this season and the most since she had 54 against Randolph-Macon last season.
  • The Captains totaled 55 assists, tied for the second-most of the season and one shy of their season-best, which came in their last match against Virginia Wesleyan.
  • CNU set a new season-high mark of 75 digs on Wednesday night. Noelle Starr led the way with 24
