SALISBURY, Md. -- Despite the defense holding Salisbury University to just two shots on-goal in the match, the 25th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team suffered a hard-luck 1-0 setback on the road on Wednesday afternoon. The Captains fall to 9-2-2 after a late first-half goal held up as the only score of the game.
The Captains outshot the Sea Gulls (6-4-4) by a final count of 16-6 in the game as the home team avenged a 3-0 loss to Christopher Newport just 11 days ago. CNU put four shots on frame and managed four corner kicks at Salisbury.
Despite a decided advantage in possession, the Captains surrendered a single goal with under five minutes left in the first half when Jake Trama slid a shot under sophomore goalkeeper
Hayden Dewey to take a 1-0 lead.
Christopher Newport ripped nine shots in the second half looking to equalize, but could not find the back of the net. Sophomore
Matt Liss nearly connected in the final seven minutes after a long throw-in by the second-year player wound up back at his feet in the box. His shot was saved by the Salisbury keeper for the last real chance in the match for the Captains.
Senior
Elton Quintanilla took a team-high four shots, including one on target, while leading scorer
Mason Field added two shots and one on-frame.
The No. 25 Captains are back in action this weekend as they travel to Washington and Lee University on Saturday, October 21. Kickoff against the Generals is set for 1:00 p.m. on the road.
