LEXINGTON, Va. -- After 90 minutes of stalemate soccer, the second-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team was forced to settle for a draw at Washington and Lee University on Sunday afternoon, snapping a pair of CNU win streaks, ending a 16-game road winning streak and a nine-game roll overall to start the 2023 season. Still, the tie extended the Captains' overall unbeaten streak to 55 games (50-0-5) and CNU is now 9-0-1 overall on the season at the start of October.
Earning the team's third consecutive shutout, rookie
Amy Sidaway starred in goal again for the Captains with her fifth clean sheet of the season. In six games this year, Sidaway has surrendered just a single goal, on a penalty kick, and boasts a 0.17 goals-against average in 540 minutes played.
The defense in front of her, featuring
Reanna Slater,
Nyah Savage, and
Jackie Stallard successfully stunted another dangerous attack on Sunday, holding the Generals to just six total shots and one on target. As a team, the Captains committed just two fouls in the game with a disciplined possession game that forced action forward throughout the contest. Slater, Savage, and Stallard played the full 90 minutes along with
Kyleigh Gough and
Ellie Cox in the midfield.
While the defense did it's job, the offense snapped off 20 shots or more for the eighth time in 10 games this season. Playing in a season-high 75 minutes, fifth-year senior
Sarah Smith took eight of the 20 total shots including a pair on goal. Fellow fifth-year
Clare Davis had the only other shot on-goal in the game for the Captains with her lone attempt in the 87th minute.
Alex Devers,
Hanna Heaton,
Katy Bronski, and Cox each registerd two shots each as CNU looked for the back of the net often. Rounding out the offensive attempts were single shots by Savage,
Natalie Swarm,
Lexi Hazelgrove, and Davis.
Playing against Washington and Lee for the first time since 2009, the Captains are now 0-2-2 all-time against the Generals with all four games played in Lexington.
CNU will return to action this Saturday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. against the University of Mary Washington Eagles.
