FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Five different Captains found the back of the net on Satrurday night as the second-ranked CNU Women's Soccer team rolled to a 5-0 win at Mary Washington (5-5-1) to improve to 10-0-1 on the season. CNU scored three first-half goals and added two more after the break to break out offensively in a dominant performance against the Eagles.
The best offensive game of the season for Christopher Newport came hand-in-hand with yet another dominant defensive performance as the Captains surrendered just a single shot in the game. CNU has now held opponents to eight shots or less in all but one game this season including eight games with five or fewer attempted.
Amy Sidaway and
Abby Ochs combined for the team shutout, marking the ninth clean sheet for the Captains' defense in 11 games played this season.
The defense continued a four-game shutout streak and has not allowed a goal since September 17, but Saturday night's game belonged to the offense.
A relentless attack suffocated the Mary Washington defense as all five goals came from different CNU players. Sophomore midfielder
Hanna Heaton picked up her first career score in the 11th minute to kick things off just over ten minutes into the contest. The tally would hold up as the game-winning goal, marking the first in the career of Heaton.
Just over 15 minutes later,
Natalie Swarm sprung
Sarah Smith loose down the middle of the field with a nice challenge against two defenders. Swarm managed to work through contact to slide a pinpoint pass through the center of the field for Smith who had worked free between a pair of defenders. With no one in front of her but the goalkeeper, the fifth-year All-American found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Just before the end of the half, the Captains got a third goal as hometown girl
Katy Bronski slid a low burner under the keeper in the 40th minute of action.
Kyleigh Gough lofted a long pass over the defense to the left side and Bronski paid off the pass with her second goal of the year.
Carrying a 3-0 advantage into halftime, the nationally-ranked Captains outshot the home team, 6-0, in the first 45 minutes. Things would continue in that direction in the second half as Christopher Newport ripped another 13 attempts in the game to finish with 19 total shots.
Two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half really put the game out of reach as
Emma Ricci worked for an unassisted tally in the 51st minute and
Corinne Kulik perfectly placed a shot on a tough angle after a pass from
Jackie Stallard.
The Captains finished the game with 13 of their 19 attempts on goal. Twenty-six different players saw action in the game with 24 of them logging at least 10 minutes on the field.
The win extended unbeaten streaks for the Captains to 56 games overall (51-0-5) and 18 consecutive road games without a loss (17-0-1). Christopher Newport will return to action on the road this Tuesday, October 10 as the Captains travel to Southern Virginia University. CNU will then return home next weekend as they play Mary Washington again in a return trip to Newport News on Saturday, October 14 at 4:00 p.m.
