NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport Volleyball will hit the road for the first time this season with a trip to Fredericksburg for the Mary Washington Invitational, which features matches against Mary Washington, Scranton, and Carnegie Mellon.Â
Match Details
The Captains open the weekend on Friday at 4:00pm against the hosting Mary Washington followed by a 6:00pm match against Scranton. On Saturday, CNU faces Carnegie Mellon at 12:00pm. All of the matches will be streamed on UMWEagles.com
Last Time Out
CNU dropped the first set on Wednesday night, but rebounded to win three in a row and take down Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 at the Freeman Center.

Mackenzie Wright tied for the team lead with 12 kills, and lead the Captains with 52 and 43 kills, respectively. The Captains served up 10 aces, including four from
Anna Dean in her fourth serving performance of three or more aces in the five-match season.

Series History
Christopher Newport is 18-24 all-time against Mary Washington, but have won the last seven meetings including three in the 2021 season. The Captains met UMW in the Coast-to-Coast Championship last season and took the title in a 3-2 victory. CNU leads the series with Scranton 3-0, with their last meeting coming in 2016. CNU and Carnegie Mellon have split in their only two previous meetings, both taking place at neutral sites.
Scouting the Eagles
Mary Washington ventured to the Tidewater last weekend to compete in the Virginia Wesleyan Marlin Invitational. The Eagles went 2-1, sweeping Randolph-Macon and Pitt. Bradford before falling in five sets to the hosting Marlins. UMW also ventured to Eastern Mennonite, sweeping the Royals on Wednesday night. Caitlyn Burch has been the most effective attacker for the Eagles, averaging two kills per set and hitting .523.
Scouting the Royals
Scranton hosted the Scranton Invitational last weekend to open their season. The Royals went 2-1 with four set wins over Nazareth and Muhlenberg and a five set loss to Lebanon Valley. Setter Caileigh Cox had a great start to the season, with 11.31 assists per set in the opening weekend, good for fourth nationally.
Scouting the Tartans
Carnegie Mellon went 2-1 at the Mount Union Invitational in the opening weekend, losing to Otterbein and beating Alma and Mount Union. The Tartans exhibited some stout defense in their first three matches with 27 blocks. Isabella Sierra comes into this weekend averaging 1.22 blocks per set.
