NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport's field hockey game against Shenandoah on Friday evening has been moved to October 12, so the Captains will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when the squad squares off with No. 17 Lynchburg at Shellenberger Field.
This week's showdown with Shenandoah was postponed due to the impending effects of Hurricane Ian, which forced the Hornets to move up their league battle at Virginia Wesleyan from Saturday to Friday. The game time for October 12 has yet to be determined but will be posted on CNUsports.com as soon as it is available.
As a result of the postponement, Christopher Newport will now set its sights on a top-20 test against Lynchburg on Sunday. The Captains will enter that game with a 6-3 record, while the Hornets sit at 8-1 with a match-up against Randolph-Macon looming on Friday night.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at LynchburgSports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is on a two-game roll after shutting out Catholic, 1-0, last Wednesday before blanking Wilson, 4-0, on Saturday.
Delaney Norr scored in both contests, while
Morgan Arthur had a point in each bout. On the other end,
Lily Kerr held the opposition scoreless during her time between the pipes, while
Marcella Sabbagh was honored as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her work on the back line.
Among all qualified goalies in the nation, Kerr currently ranks second with a 0.22 goals-against-average. Overall, as a team, the Captains are allowing just 0.89 goals per contest, which ranks 16th in the country.
On the offensive end, Christopher Newport has been equally effective. The squad's 4.22 goals-per-game average is eighth in the NCAA. Five players already have at least 10 points this season, including
Emma Logue, who ranks fourth in the league with 16. She and
Emily Evans are also tied for third in the conference with six goals apiece.
In addition to Evans and Kerr, two other freshmen have also seen action in all nine games this year as
Brie Mallozzi and
Joelie Erwin have made contributions in every outing in 2022. Additionally,
Gwendolyn Via has appeared in seven contests and notched an assist in the opener against Bridgewater.
Lynchburg enters Friday's clash with Randolph-Macon on a six-game winning streak, including a triumph over No. 3 Johns Hopkins on September 17. The squad's only setback this season came in a 2-1 double-overtime marathon at No. 13 Ursinus on September 10.
So far this season, Kayla Brady ranks 11th in the NCAA in save percentage (.839) and 25th in goals-against-average (1.01). On the other end of the field, Emily Yanes leads the Hornets with eight goals and 18 points. Brittany Claybaugh also has five strikes and is tied with Kessa Romero for the team-lead with three assists.
In 19 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 10-9 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains picked up a 2-0 victory in Newport News as
Vivian Pope and
Katie Abendschoen both found the back of the cage.
After Sunday, Christopher Newport will return to action on October 8 when the squad hosts Centre at noon.
