CNU Women's Tennis Wraps Up First Tournament of the Year With Sunday Afternoon Action

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Tessa Trate and Raine Weis opened up the 2022-23 season with a strong start to doubles action, pairing up for a perfect 4-0 record this weekend at the CNU Invite. The Captains faced Division I Hampton, Division I Longwood, Division II Chowan, and Division III Sweet Briar in the mock dual format and finished with six wins in tandem play and in singles action. 

Weis and Trate got things started with an 8-6 win over their Hampton counterparts on Friday. In Saturday and Sunday's action, the duo fired off three more victories to open the year 4-0 and improve to 14-6 together all-time. Over the last ten matchups, the Captains' top tandem are 8-2 with three out-of-division victories and one against a regionally-ranked opponent. This weekend, CNU's No. 1 duo defeated Feidi Abreu Rodriguez/Valentina Domenicone of Chowan (8-4), Emma Nurgazieva/Karina Rizvanova from Longwood (8-4), and Ruth de Souza/Allison Wandling from Sweet Briar (8-2). 

Weis also had a strong start in singles play, going 2-1 to lead the way for the Captains. Weis earned wins over de Souza (6-1, 6-0) and Hampton's Sofia Sokolova (6-3, 6-1) while dropping a hard-fought battle to Longwood's No. 1 Emma Nurgazieva 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-7. 

Over the weekend, Kendra Womack earned a win in a back-and-forth bout with Abreu Rodriguez of Chowan (6-3, 5-7, 10-5) while Anna Campbell also won against Chowan's Micayah Porter (7-5, 6-3). Facing Sweet Briar, Trate added a dominant win over Kate Kotany (6-1, 6-0) to round out the singles wins for CNU. 

In pairs play, Kiersten Chang and Womack paired up for an 8-1 win against Wiktoria Czerny and Sophia Marchetta of Longwood and Megan Bauer played with Campbell to secure an 8-2 win over Alex and Isabela Guilarte from Sweet Briar. 

The Captains will next appear on September 23-26 at the ITA Southeast Regional hosted at the University of Mary Washington.
