Clarkson Sneaks Past No. 11 CNU Men's Soccer, 1-0, in Saturday Non-Conference Matchup

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team outshot Clarkson, 21-6, but a first-half goal was enough to disrupt the Captains' win streak to start the year, earning a 1-0 win on the road at Captains Field. CNU falls to 2-1-0 overall while Clarkson improved to 3-0-0 following the match.

Taking on Clarkson for the first time in program history, the Captains surrendered a goal to the  Golden Knights in the 14th minute and could not find the equalizer after 90 minutes.

The Captains looked primed to take an early lead when Ryan Machado-Jones placed a highlight-reel header on frame in the third minute, stopped by a diving save. The newcomer also added a header that sailed just wide off a corner kick moments later. The CNU offense took 11 shots in the opening stanza with three on net.

Clarkson scored after a long pass bounded over the defense by Kyle Otis and Josh Conklin took one touch before volleying the high-bouncer into the net on the left side.

It was the only miscue of the game for the Captains defense which only allowed one more shot on-goal in the contest. The CNU back line, led by Jonah Fitz, Ryan Kiely, and Jacob Dudley, and Kyle Stenzel, gave up only six total shots in the game. The only other shot on goal came in the 42nd minute when Nolan Grady unleashed a long laser with space in the middle of the field. The Captains' starting goalkeeper, Ethan Larson, read the shot perfectly, soared into the air and punched it away.

After halftime, the offensive pressure continued from Christopher Newport, with ten shots attempted and three on-goal. Carter Kladstrup made five saves for Clarkson to keep the Captains off the board.

Schedule Change: The next game for the Captains, originally scheduled for Jennings Family Stadium at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, has been changed. CNU will now face Pfeiffer University at 12:00 p.m. on Captains Field at the soccer stadium.
