NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Less than 24 hours after a hard-luck loss to Clarkson, the 11th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team rebounded with an offensive deluge against the Pfeiffer University Falcons (0-3-2), scoring five goals before an actual deluge forced the players off the field in the 73rd minute of action. With thunder and lightning in the area, the game was called official at that point, awarding the Captains a 5-0 victory as the team improved to 3-1-0 on the season.
Christopher Newport scored three first-half goals and added two more in the first 28 minutes of the second half before the game was called. Five different players scored for the Captains with two more getting assists in the game while
Kyle Stenzel led the way scoring the game-winning goal and assisting on another later in the match.
CNU held a decided 22-3 advantage in total shots in the game, including putting eight shots on frame to just two for the Falcons.
The eventual gamewinner would come in the 21st minute after a long throw-in from the right side.
Matt Liss, who had just checked in on the play, unleashed a mammoth throw into the box where Stenzel was waiting. The newcomer hammered home the header to give the Captains a 1-0 lead.
As the rain began to fall late in the first half,
Asher Kuzemka doubled the lead with another header goal. This time, the ball was bouncing around the box when Kuzemka leaped up against a defender and got enough on his shot to find the back of the goal.
Rounding out the first half scoring for the Captains was rookie
LB Sutton, powering in a finish with his right foot into the right side of the goal. His unassisted tally came after the defense failed to clear the ball out of the box and Sutton drilled a shot through the crowded box and in.
CNU outshot Pfeiffer, 16-1, in the first half, with five attempts on goal.
Into the second half, the Captains wasted little time adding to the lead with a pretty passing play in the 53rd minute. Just over seven minutes into the stanza,
Elton Quintanilla started a combination passing play from the left into the middle where Stenzel turned and found
Barry Jones on the right. Jones knocked home his first career goal and gave CNU a 4-0 lead.
Finishing up the scoring, senior
Kobe Smith picked up his first goal of the season on an unassisted attack down the middle. He beat a defender before touching by the keeper and slipping in a shot during the 72nd minute of play.
Christopher Newport will be back in action next weekend as they welcome Covenant College (Ga.) on Friday, September 16 at 6:00 p.m. before playing host to the UT Dallas Comets on Sunday, September 18 at 1:00 p.m.
