FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Following a remarkable run as one of Christopher Newport's most decorated student-athletes,
Dylan Rice capped off his tenure by earning the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which is bestowed upon the league standout who best combined superior academic and athletic achievements during his career.
One of the nation's most accomplished men's lacrosse stars, Rice joined former track & field legend Zach Campbell as the only Captains in school history to earn the prestigious award. Campbell was celebrated for his efforts in 2017.
Along with joining an exclusive group at Christopher Newport, Rice also became just the fourth men's lacrosse player in league history to earn the Scholar-Athlete award. He added his name to a list featuring St. Mary's Peter Windsor (2012), York's Tyler Hutson (2015), and Salisbury's Corey Gwin (2019).
Previously, Rice was named the Coast-to-Coast Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2021 and 2022. He became the first two-time recipient in league history.
On the field, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native was nearly an unstoppable force while anchoring the attack. During his five seasons with the program, Rice deposited 244 goals, which established a new school standard and marked the 13th-highest total in NCAA history. His 339 total points also set a new program record and moved him to 21st on the all-time national charts.
A dominant performer throughout his tenure, Rice absolutely torched the record books during the 2022 campaign. In his final year, he collected 72 goals and 105 points. Both of those totals established new school standards. They also placed him in the top-15 in the NCAA during the season. Meanwhile, his eight goals against Roanoke on February 12 set a new single-game scoring record as well.
In addition to his eight strikes against the Maroons, Rice also added a pair of assists in that contest, which allowed him to tie his own single-game points record. In fact, in the 257 games played in program history, only three have seen a player reach double-figures in points. Rice recorded all three. Along with his work against Roanoke, he also added 10 points against Whittier on March 27 after establishing the record with an identical outburst against St. Mary's (Md.) on May 1, 2021.
Overall, he owns five of the program's top-10 single-game point efforts and four of the top-10 goal totals. His six assists against Whittier earlier this year also equaled the second-most in program history.
Along with his historic senior campaign, Rice also set freshman records with 56 goals and 75 points in 2018. Incredibly, the fifth-year phenom owns four of the school's top-six single-season goal outputs. He also deposited 52 strikes in 2019 and added 49 in 2021.
Remarkably consistent, Rice collected at least one point in his final 50 career appearances, marking the longest scoring streak in school history. Overall, he notched a point in 80 of his 82 career games while netting 52 hat-tricks.
Amassing a seemingly endless collection of awards for his work, Rice was named an All-American during each of his final four seasons, including a first-team USILA and IMLCA selection in 2022. He also landed two All-Region honors, four All-Conference citations, and five All-State plaudits. Meanwhile, he was celebrated as the IMLCA Region Offensive Player of the Year during his final campaign after beginning his tenure as the State and Conference Rookie of the Year in 2018.
While his on-field accomplishments made him one of the most honored student-athletes in Christopher Newport history, Rice was equally successful in the classroom. He graduated with a near perfect GPA while receiving a bachelor's degree in finance and a master's degree in financial analysis.
For his work in the classroom, Rice became the first male athlete in school history to earn three CoSIDA Academic All-American accolades. In fact, he became just the sixth standout in the history of collegiate lacrosse to earn three CoSIDA awards. Additionally, he was a two-time USILA Scholar All-American, a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, and a five-time Academic All-Conference honoree. He also landed a spot on the Academic All-State squad during each of his final two years.
