Christopher Newport Men's Tennis Moves Up To No. 37 in Final ITA Rankings of the Year

TEMPE, Ariz. -- After a nationally-ranked win in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team vaulted three spots to No. 37 in the final ITA Division III Men's Tennis National Rankings, led by nationally-ranked tandem Ryan Macy and Alec Strause. The veteran combo is ranked No. 25 in the final doubles poll of the season, marking the first time since 2017-18 that a CNU pair has been listed in the final rankings in back-to-back years.

Christopher Newport has now been ranked in each of the ITA final polls since 2015 except during the 2020 COVID-19 shortened season. In ten seasons under Director of Tennis Eric Christiansen, the Captains have climbed to a top-25 finish twice and have been pegged a top-40 program in seven consecutive full seasons.

In addition to the national rankings, the final Atlantic South regional rankings were also released, listing Christopher Newport at No. 9 in the area, featuring Ryan Macy as the No. 12-ranked singles player and the Macy/Strause partnership ranked No. 6 in doubles.

Macy and Strause are the first tandem since Justin Cerny and David Reed finished the 2017 and 2018 campaigns ranked No. 14 in the nation to earn a national ranking in back-to-back seasons. This year, Macy and Strause competed in 27 matches together, winning 15 including 12 in dual play at the No. 1 position. Despite having only played as a pair in the last two seasons, Macy and Strause combined for the sixth most wins at No. 1 doubles in CNU men's tennis history. This year's 12 wins ranks tenth in program lore.

Macy earned the singles regional ranking as well after logging seven wins in dual play and nine overall.

This season, CNU played 11 matches against teams in the final ITA Division III National Rankings and four more against teams listed in the regional rankings. The Captains were 10-9 overall and reached the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship Match for the sixth time in program history.
