Christopher Newport secured its spot in the championship game after knocking off Mary Washington, 5-4, during a defensive battle on Wednesday in the semifinals.
Maddie Rusinko came through with a career-high six caused turnovers, which equaled the most in a postseason game in school history.
Lizzie Burgoyne also chipped in with 12 saves and two takeaways during a starring role between the pipes.
On the offensive end,
Syd Guidi landed a pair of goals, while
Zoe Dyer,
Eleanor Collins, and
Kelsey Winters added one each.
So far this season, several players have added their names to the program's all-time single-season charts. Winters has already established a new school record with 63 assists, while her 91 points are tied for the sixth-most by a Captain. Meanwhile,
Emma Jackson is third in program history with 95 draw controls.
Jackson is also four draws away from leaping into the top-10 on the program's career charts. Her 110 draw controls currently rank 11th in school history.
On the other end of the field,
Madi Rozgonyi's 32 caused turnovers are the third-most by any player in program history and the highest total by a freshman. Rusinko and Jackson are also tied for 13th all-time with 23 takeaways this season.
Salisbury earned the top seed in the conference playoffs after posting an unblemished record in league play during the regular season. The Sea Gulls are led by Erin Scannell, who ranks second in the conference with 51 goals and was honored as the Coast-to-Coast Offensive Player of the Year.
Equally dominant on the defensive end, Caroline McKenna ranks fourth in the league with 22 caused turnovers and 45 draw controls, while her 23 ground balls place her 10th overall. For her work, she was honored as the Coast-to-Coast Defensive Player of the Year.
The championship game will mark the second meeting between the two programs this season after Salisbury posted a 21-7 victory against the Captains last Saturday. During that showdown, Dyer posted two goals for Christopher Newport, while Winters added three points, including a pair of assists. On the other side, Emma Skoglund chipped in with eight points, and both Scannell and Lydia McNulty added hat-tricks.
