Eight Captains Earn All-American Honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine; Hines, Pozin, and Wayne Secure First-Team Accolades

SPARKS, Md. -- Eight members of the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team secured All-American honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine, while Phoenix Hines, Campbell Pozin, and Max Wayne hauled in first-team honors for their work during the 2022 campaign.

With their awards, Hines, Pozin, and Wayne became the first Captains to earn first-team All-American honors in program history. Meanwhile, Dylan Rice and Andrew Cook garnered second-team nods, while Coby Auslander, Warner Cabaniss, and Burke Widhelm grabbed honorable mention plaudits. Overall, the eight honorees marked the most in school lore.

Hines earned national honors for the third time in his career after securing citations from Inside Lacrosse in 2020 and USILA in 2021. Continuing his record-setting run with the Captains, the Ashburn, Virginia native currently ranks 16th in the NCAA with 47 takeaways this year. That total also places him fourth on the program's all-time single-season list. Meanwhile, the long-stick midfielder stands first in school history with 178 career caused turnovers and fourth with 210 ground balls.

Equally important on the defensive side, Pozin has pieced together an exceptional season as a short-stick specialist. Capitalizing on his elite instincts and game-changing speed, the Virginia Beach native has helped smother the opposition throughout the 2022 campaign. He currently has 11 caused turnovers and ranks ninth in the league with 47 ground balls while also serving as a wing on faceoffs. Additionally, the senior has 51 career caused turnovers, which marks the most by a short-stick midfielder in school history.

One of the nation's leading defensemen, Wayne has anchored Christopher Newport's back line since 2018. Adding to his impressive résumé in 2022, the Ashburn, Virginia native ranks 18th in the NCAA with 46 caused turnovers while also hauling in 48 ground balls. Securing All-American honors during each of the last four years, he stands second in school history with 170 caused turnovers. Meanwhile, his 81 consecutive starts since his collegiate debut stand as the longest active "Iron Man" streak in the country.

A lethal force on the offensive end, Rice has torched the back of the net with regularity over the past five seasons. In his fifth year with the Captains, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native has established new single-season program records with 62 goals and 92 points. His 62 strikes also place him 17th in the entire NCAA this year. A four-time All-American, he has rewritten Christopher Newport's record books with 326 career points and 234 goals. Both of those totals also rank in the top-10 among all active players in the country.

In his first season at Christopher Newport, Cook has been a focal point on the program's midfield unit. During the 2022 campaign, the Mechanicsville, Virginia native ranks fifth in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference with 46 goals and sixth with 61 points. His 46 tallies also stand as the highest total by a midfielder in school history and the seventh-most by any Captain in program lore. A consistent threat, he has at least two points in each of his 17 appearances, including 13 multi-goal efforts and 10 hat-tricks.

Another key cog on Christopher Newport's midfield crew, Auslander has been one of the nation's leading facilitators in 2022. During his junior campaign, the Pennington, New Jersey native boasts 41 assists, which stands as a new single-season program record. He has posted a helper in 14 of his appearances and notched two or more on 11 occasions. Additionally, he has deposited at least one goal in 16 appearances while ranking second on the squad with 69 total points this year.

Bursting onto the scene with a fantastic debut campaign, Cabaniss is the first freshman in program history to secure All-American honors. One of the nation's leading faceoff specialists, the Richmond, Virginia native ranks 22nd in the nation with a .663 winning percentage. That also stands as the finest rate in school history. Honored as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, he has also collected 117 ground balls, which has already established a new single-season program record.

An intimidating presence on the defensive unit, Widhelm has starred throughout his senior season. Locking down the opposition, the Richmond, Virginia native ranks fourth in the league with 31 caused turnovers and ninth with 47 ground balls. He has posted at least two takeaways in nine of his appearances, including six against Washington & Lee on March 23, which equaled the seventh-most by a Captain in school history. Aided by Widhelm's efforts, Christopher Newport currently ranks first in the nation in caused turnovers per game.

The Captains will continue the 2022 campaign on Saturday at noon when Christopher Newport hosts Sewanee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Jennings Family Stadium.
