NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University chalked up two more softball victories on Sunday, as the top-ranked Captains downed Greensboro College by scores of 5-0 and 8-0.
Keith Parr's team is now 25-1 overall, and the Captains improved to 13-0 at home this season.
Freshman pitcher
Kate Alger was the story in the opening game, throwing the first six innings of shutout ball and improving her record to 10-0 for the season. Alger gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out nine Pride batters. She has now recorded 86 strikeouts in 61 innings of work, and lowered her earned run average to 0.69. Junior
Abby Rochette pitched the final scoreless frame as the Captains posted their 13th shutout of the year.
CNU had five different players score runs in the opener, and five different Captains drove home the runs in the victory on a sunny and breezy afternoon at Captains Park. Christopher Newport jumped to an early lead on an RBI single off the bat of senior
Kaitlyn Hasty in the first inning. CNU scored two more runs in the third and two in the fourth. Senior
Caroline Helmer delivered a run-scoring single up the middle in the third, followed by a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Katie Currin to make it 3-0. In the fourth, senior
Caitlin Abernethy doubled home a run, and senior
Bailey Roberts contributed a sacrifice fly to account for the final 5-0 verdict.
In the nightcap, the Captains closed out the Pride in the sixth inning, 8-0, due to the eight-run mercy rule. The big hit came in the first frame as Currin crushed a three-run home run, her sixth of the season, to put CNU ahead, 4-0. Hasty opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, and then drove home another run in the second with a sac fly, her second of the game and third of the day to make it 5-0 after two innings.
Christopher Newport added two more runs in the third frame on RBI hits from seniors
Sarah Proctor and
Maddie Hool. The game ended in the bottom of the sixth when freshman
Sammy Drew hit a shot up the middle that allowed freshman
Meredith Brickner to score from third with the eighth and game-ending run.
Freshman
Jamie Martin pitched the nightcap for the Captains, going the first five innings without allowing any runs and just two hits. She improved her record to 7-1 on the season, and struck out four. Freshman
Olivia Kim tossed a scoreless sixth frame in relief as the Captains registered their 14th shutout win of the season.
Currin's home run in the second game was the only long ball of the day, and was CNU's 47th home run of the season in 26 games. Christopher Newport leads the nation in home runs, runs scored, and base hits.
Greensboro fell to 17-7 with the two losses. The defeats marked the first two times this year the Pride has been held scoreless.
Christopher Newport plays again at home next Sunday, hosting Meredith College for a doubleheader at Captains Park. It will be Senior Day for CNU, and the pre-game activities will begin at approximately 1:00 p.m. with the opening game set to start at 1:30 p.m.
