Christopher Newport was last in action on April 20 when the Captains upended Meredith, 19-6. Against the Avenging Angels,
Madi Rozgonyi established a new freshman record with seven caused turnovers, which earned her the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week award. She also added six ground balls, which equaled the most by a first-year player since 2010.
Offensively,
Syd Guidi erupted for six goals against Meredith, and
Kendall Krause chipped in with four strikes.
Kelsey Winters also contributed a pair of points, moving her one shy of becoming the 10th Captain to reach 200 career points.
Last Wednesday's victory marked Christopher Newport's third straight triumph. During their winning streak, the Captains have outscored the opposition, 50-17. Guidi and
Zoe Dyer have both scored at least two goals in each of the last three games, while
Alexis Kasuda also has eight goals during that stretch. Additionally,
Lizzie Burgoyne has made 16 saves while starring between the pipes. The senior goalie has now won each of her last four starts dating back to March 23.
Overall this season, Winters ranks sixth in the NCAA with 61 assists, while her 87 points place her ninth on the school's all-time single-season charts. Meanwhile,
Emma Jackson is third in program history with 86 draw controls, and Rozgonyi is tied for third all-time with 30 caused turnovers. That also stands as the highest total by a freshman in school lore.
On the other side, Salisbury enters Saturday on a four-game winning streak, including a 17-6 triumph over St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday. The Sea Gulls also have a pair of nationally-ranked victories during their recent run with triumphs over No. 5 TCNJ and No. 13 York (Pa.) last week.
On an individual level, Mary Claire Hisle leads the conference and ranks 36th nationally with an 8.51 goals-against-average. Meanwhile, Erin Scannell and Lydia McNulty have paced the attack. Scannell ranks second in the conference with 48 goals, while McNulty is fifth among league competitors with 49 total points. Additionally, Caroline McKenna has 45 draw controls and 21 caused turnovers.
In 23 previous meetings, Salisbury holds a 23-0 edge in the series. During the most recent match-up, the Sea Gulls posted a 17-8 win in the 2021 Coast-to-Coast Conference Championship. McNulty and Scannell combined for 12 goals during that tilt, while
Paige Williams led the Captains with five points, including four tallies.
