NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University's
Justin Bowers and
Danny Checkosky received weekly baseball honors from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference on Monday. Bowers was selected the Player of the Week and Checkosky was tabbed the Pitcher of the Week.
Bowers, a junior from Yorktown, Va., continues to display one of the nation's top eyes at the plate, reaching base at a .714 clip last week with three hits and six walks in 14 plate appearances. Bowers blasted his league-leading 13th home run against Washington and Lee while reaching base four out of five times (2-3 with 2 BB) and also reached base six out of eight times against Mary Washington in a conference doubleheader on Saturday at Captains Park. Bowers also was perfect defensively in 17 chances while playing both third and first base during the week.
Junior right hander Danny Checkosky, from Fairfax, Va., picked up the Pitcher of the Week honor after winning two games in relief in both of his appearances this week. He allowed just two base runners in three innings of work. Checkosky also struck out five batters and walked just one.
This is the second weekly award this season for Bowers, and fifth Player of the Week for the Captains. It's the first honor for Checkosky and fourth Pitcher of the Week for CNU. The Captains are currently scheduled to play next on Saturday, May 7th, at Salisbury University in a Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader.
