CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Picking up a marquee win over the nationally-ranked Denison Big Red, the 28th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team secured a 5-4 victory on a neutral court Saturday evening. The Captains improved to 5-6 with the win, clinched by
Raine Weis at No. 2 singles.
The first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since March 8, 2019, the Captains rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles for the one-point win after singles.
Christopher Newport picked up a key point at No. 3 doubles that would prove to be the difference in the match after Denison earned the wins at 1 and 2.
Kiersten Chang and
Karina Crivtonencu held off Hannah Bradvica and Kendall Schrader at No. 3 for the CNU win.
Mia Linam evened the scored at 2 points apiece with the first win in singles play as the Christopher Newport sophomore won at No. 4 against Bradvica (6-2, 6-1). The Big Red teetered back in front, 3-2, with the win at No.1 singles, but CNU again drew even at 3-3 with a momentum-flipping victory at No. 5 for Crivtonencu.
Taking on Caroline Lopez, Crivtonencu was stretched to a seventh game in both sets but ultimately captured the match-tying win. Crivtonencu won 7-6, 7-6 (6).
Kendra Womack then picked up the go-ahead point at No. 6 singles with a win over Susan Biederstedt (1-6, 7-5, 6-0).
Clinching the match at No. 2, Weis took on Sarah Robertson, ranked No. 24 in the Central Region. The Captains' rookie dropped the first set but secured the match for CNU with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The Captains will wrap up it's trip to Ohio with a road match at Oberlin College on Sunday.
