OBERLIN, Ohio -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team wrapped up a successful road trip to Ohio with a second straight win on Sunday afternoon. The Captains (6-6) traveled to Oberlin College to earn an 8-1 win over the Yeowomen.
CNU has now won five of the last six matches to draw their overall record even at 6-6. Oberlin dropped to 7-8 overall.
The Captains won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. They then rolled through the individual matches with a singles sweep for the 8-1 final. As one of four Captains to win in both singles and doubles,
Kiersten Chang had the most dominant performance on the day for CNU, dropping just a single game in singles action to win at No. 3 while also picking up an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
Chang played with
Karina Crivtonencu for an 8-5 win over Francesca Kern and Dina Nouaime. CNU also won at No. 1 doubles with
Tessa Trate and
Raine Weis capturing an 8-3 victory over Claudia Olaes and Isabella Olaes. The Captains nearly swept doubles with an 8-7 (5) loss at No. 2 with
Megan Bauer and
Mia Linam edged out by Marta Laska and Anna Pastore.
Carrying momentum into singles action, the Captains continued to play well in indvidual action, winning five of the six bouts in straight sets. Chang's victory over Isabelle Olaes at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0) was bested only by
Mia Linam's dominant win over Claudia Olaes at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0). Crivtonencu dispatched of her foe at No. 5 singles, Alandria Bellamy, by a final score of 6-1, 6-1, while
Anna Campbell also won by the same score at No. 6 over Francesca Kern.
CNU finished out the sweet with wins by Trate and Weis at 1 and 2, respectively. Trate rebounded from a first-set loss to regionally-ranked Marta Laska to earn a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1. Weis wrapped up the dominant victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Pastore.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday, April 9 against Salisbury University. CNU will also face Johns Hopkins on April 10 the same weekend.
