NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University swept the weekly softball awards handed out Monday by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. Freshman
Jamie Martin was named the Pitcher of the Week and senior
Caroline Helmer was chosen the Player of the Week.
Martin, a freshman left-hander from Lorton, Va., threw her first career no-hitter Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader sweep at Mary Washington. After hitting the first batter she faced, Martin retired the next 21 Eagles to come to the plate, striking out ten. It was the first no-hitter of the season for the Captains, and the 29th no-hitter or perfect game in program history. Martin won both games in a doubleheader sweep last Thursday over William Peace at Captains Park, earning the victory after starting the opener and entering the second game in relief. She now has a record of 11-1 for the season, and recorded 18 strikeouts last week in 13 innings of work without allowing a walk.
Helmer, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., had hits in each of the four wins for the Captains last week. She posted a home run, three doubles and three runs batted in. Helmer also scored three times and recorded a .571 on-base percentage as well as a slugging percentage of 1.000.
Helmer becomes the fifth different CNU student-athlete to be named Player of the Week. She joins senior
Sarah Proctor, senior
Kaitlyn Hasty (twice), sophomore
Katie Currin, and sophomore
Brooke Greaver who have previously been honored. It's the first time Martin has been named Pitcher of the Week, and freshman teammate
Kate Alger has taken the honor twice this season.
The Captains are 31-1 and have been ranked the top team in the nation for the last four weeks. Wednesday at Captains Park, CNU will host the second-ranked Sea Gulls of Salisbury University. The C2C doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. The Gulls are 30-2 overall and 2-0 in league play heading into Wednesday's showdowns.
