NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will open up Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains host Mary Washington on Senior Day at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport sits at 7-7 with a 4-3 mark at home. Meanwhile, Mary Washington is 8-6 overall and 5-2 on the road. The Eagles are also 0-1 in league action this year after kicking off the conference campaign with a 15-7 setback against Salisbury on April 2.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Prior to Saturday's game, Christopher Newport will honor the four graduating members of the roster. Fifth-year senior
Joely Stevens and fourth-year standouts
Lizzie Burgoyne,
Zoe Dyer, and
Alexis Kasuda will all be honored for their impact on the program. Fellow seniors
Kendall Krause and
Riley Rafterry-Lee have opted to return for a fifth season in 2023.
Since arriving on campus, the graduating contingent has helped Christopher Newport knock off four nationally-ranked opponents, marking the most by a single class in school history. Along the way, the Captains have climbed as high as 20th in the IWLCA National Coaches Poll, advanced to the Coast-to-Coast Conference Championship for the first time in school history, and taken their show on the road while posting victories from Puerto Rico to Illinois and a host of places in between.
Equally impactful this year, Dyer is third in the conference with 35 goals and 48 points, while Kasuda is eighth with 22 strikes and currently stands as the reigning Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. On the other end of the field, Burgoyne is third in the league with 35 saves while sporting a team-best 10.73 goals-against-average and .407 save percentage. Stevens has also started all 14 games on the back line and ranks seventh among conference competitors with 13 takeaways.
The Captains are coming off of an explosive 20-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan in Chicago on Sunday.
Emma Jackson secured 14 draw controls against the Titans, which established a new single-game program record.
Kelsey Winters also erupted for 11 points, including eight assists. Aided by that performance, the junior All-American now has 59 helpers this year, which ranks third in the NCAA and stands as the highest single-season total in school history.
Mary Washington enters the weekend on a two-game roll, including a 12-10 triumph at Moravian on Wednesday. Against the Greyhounds, Clare Madden and Rebecca Pullen posted hat-tricks, while Kayla Sarazin added three points and eight draws. On the other end, Maya Levin had three takeaways, and Reilly Miller contributed three saves to pick up her eighth win of the season.
So far this year, Miller ranks 25th in the NCAA with 128 saves, while her .504 save percentage places her first in the league and 38th among all goalies in the country. Offensively, Katie Blair leads the conference with 46 goals and ranks second with 53 total points. Sarazin is also second among league competitors with 19 assists.
Saturday's game will mark the 21st meeting between the two programs with the Eagles holding a 17-3 edge in the series. However, Christopher Newport won the last two showdowns, including a 12-9 triumph in Fredericksburg during the 2021 Coast-to-Coast Conference Semifinals.
Following this weekend's contest, the Captains will return to action on April 20 for a 5 p.m. tilt against Meredith.
