ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team won five singles matches to clinch the match against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Wednesday morning, closing out the team's trip to Central Florida with a 6-3 win. The Captains (2-5) also got the win at No. 3 doubles as they dropped RPI's overall record to 5-6.
Mia Linam and
Kiersten Chang earned the win for CNU at No. 3 doubles and both went on to sweep the day with wins at No. 4 and 3, respectively, in singles play. The Captains also won at lines 2, 5, and 6 to complete the 6-3 win.
The match started in favor of RPI with two of three pairs matchups going to the Engineers. At No. 2,
Karina Crivtonencu and
Amanda Yermal narrowly missed shifting momentum in favor of the Captains by suffering an 8-7 setback. Still, with Chang and Linam putting the Captains on the board with an 8-1 win over Brooke Bauer and Sonya Khudyakov, the Captains needed just four singles matches to win.
CNU would do one better, winning all but the No. 1 match in singles action. The Captains worked quickly through five straight-set victories led by Chang's dominant performance at No. 3. She defeated Rani Jones by a final count of 6-2, 6-0, and was the only competitors on the day to drop fewer than three games in her match.
Kendra Womack surrendered just three in a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 and
Raine Weis cruised through her match against Lorna Flores Gonazlez for a 6-1, 6-4 win. Linam's second victory of the day came over Nitya Subramaniam, 6-4, 6-2, and Crivtonencu managed a 6-3, 6-4 finish against bauer at No. 5.
Christopher Newport will return to action at home on Saturday, March 19 as they take on N.C. Wesleyan College. Also coming to Newport News that weekend will be Washington (Md.), set to face CNU at Noon on Sunday, March 20.
