NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team rolled past Washington College (Md.) on Sunday, shutting out the Shorewomen at the Eyre Courts, 9-0. The Captains won two doubles bouts and four singles matches against the short-handed Washington (Md.) squad.
Tessa Trate and
Raine Weis each won in both of their matches to lead the way for Christopher Newport.
Leading off in doubles play, the Captains Trate and Weis paired up for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. The duo played against Bin Nguyen and Alisha White for Washington. The Captains earned a win by default at No. 2 before
Ana Clara Borga and
Amanda Yermal swept the doubles point at No. 3 with an 8-4 win. Borga and Yermal defeated Irene Meng and Piper Sartison.
In singles action, the Captains pulled away to win the match with victories at 1, 2, 4, and 5. CNU also won at 3 and 6 by default.
Trate earned the win over Irene Meng at No. 1 (6-1, 6-4) and Weis notched her second win of the day with a win over White (6-1, 6-2).
Mia Linam captured a straight set win at No. 4 over Nguyen (6-4, 6-1) and wrapping up the Captains' wins was
Karina Crivtonencu with a dominant performance against Katie Ruppert (6-2, 6-0).
Christopher Newport improved to 3-5 overall and will return to action next weekend as they host Salisbury University on Friday, March 25 at Noon. CNU will also face Sweet Briar College on Sunday, March 27 at 11:00 am.
