NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked CNU women's tennis team won it's third straight with an 8-1 victory at home over regionally-ranked Sweet Briar College (12-3). The Captains improved to 4-5 overall with a doubles sweep and five wins in singles play.
CNU secured wins against both of Sweet Briar's regionally-ranked positions as
Tessa Trate was a part of each of them. First, she paired with
Raine Weis for an 8-1 win over one of the Atlantic South's best pairs in Ruth de Souza and Allison Wandling from Sweet Briar. The big win from CNU's ranked pair kicked off a dominant run through doubles as the Captains also won handily at No. 2 and 3.
On the second line,
Megan Bauer and
Kendra Womack teamed up for an 8-3 win over Sofia Andrade and Nikhita Simhambhatla. At No. 3,
Kiersten Chang and
Karina Crivtonencu earned an 8-2 victory against Ana Patino and Isabela Guillarte.
After dominating doubles, Trate took on a regionally-ranked battle at No. 1 singles with de Souza. The evenly-matched pair played each other tough, but it was the home court that held serve for CNU as Trate escaped with a hard-fought 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3) win.
Weis and Chang won in straight sets at 2 and 3, and the Captains also got wins at 5 and 6 with Crivtonencu and Womack, respectively. Weis took down Patino (6-0, 6-3); Chang disposed of Andrade surrendering just one game (6-1, 6-0); Crivtonencu outlasted Kate Kotany in three sets (6-3, 6-7 (1), 10-8); and, Womack rolled past Guilarte (6-1, 6-2).
Christopher Newport will take a few days off before traveling to Cleveland, Ohio for a tough turn in the schedule at No. 12 Case Western Reserve starting April 1. The Captains will face the hosts first followed by bouts against No. 29 Denison and Oberlin.
