REDLANDS, Calif. -- Concluding a match that was postponed by rain a day earlier, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team suffered a 6-3 loss at the University of Redlands to wrap up it's annual spring break trip to California on Saturday morning. With the score knotted at 2-2 after Friday's interruption, the teams returned to the courts to finish out singles play with the home team securing four wins to clinch the match.
Christopher Newport had taken a 2-1 lead after doubles on Friday when
Alec Strause and
Ryan Macy won at No. 1 and
Paul Baron paired with
Mason Kolls for the win at No. 3. Prior to the rain delay, the host Bulldogs had pulled even with a win at No. 1 singles.
In Saturday's restart,
Alec Strause pulled the Captains ahead with the win at No. 2 as he finished off Andrew Yip (6-3, 0-6, 6-1).
Ahun Vodela was ahead in the third set at the finish of Friday's action, but the back-and-forth battle against Donovan Lilov at No. 4 landed in favor of the home team on Saturday as Vodela suffered a tight loss (6-0, 3-6, 7-5).
The Redlands squad snagged the next two points to clinch the match and
Tyler Hyun retired due to an ankle sprain at No. 5 for the final score, 6-3.
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen stretched Jack Mattox to three sets before falling in his matchup (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) and
Matthew Dubuque appeared at No. 6 for the Captains where Max Hoffman won (6-4, 6-2).
The Captains will return to Hampton Roads with an overall record of 6-3. The ITA is slated to release updated ranking on March 10 prior to the Captains' next outing against North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday, March 19. That bout will be played at home with a game time to be determined.
