Ryan Macy Posts Huge Win Over No. 3 Singles Player in the Nation, But No. 34 CNU Men's Tennis Falls to No. 10 N.C. Wesleyan, 8-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Ryan Macy nabbed one of the biggest wins in program history with a No. 1 singles victory over No. 3 Jhonny Acosta, but the tenth-ranked Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan College picked up an 8-1 win over No. 34 Christopher Newport in the Saturday afternon match at home.

On the top line of singles action, Macy faced one of the nation's top opponents as Acosta came into the match with a 45-8 career record with a perfect record against Division III opponents in 2021-22. Acosta won the 2021 ITA Southeast Regional Championship and was the top-ranked player in the region and third-ranked player in the nation.

Macy was unfazed against the veteran Bishop, and handed his opponent the first regular season loss to a Division III opponent he's suffered since February 14, 2020. It was only the third regular season dual loss he has ever suffered against a Division III foe.

The two players traded 6-2 sets before Macy outlasted Acosta in the third set tiebreaker, 10-7. Macy is now 3-4 in matches at No. 1 singles this season with his second career win over a nationally-ranked opponent; the Captains' veteran also disposed of No. 27 Austin Gu of Johns Hopkins during his rookie season.

Macy highlighted the match with his marquee victory and also played well with partner Alec Strause at No. 1 doubles as the duo fell, 8-5, to No. 23 Juan Pablo Vallejo and Acosta. CNU also battled in No. 2 doubles where Paul Baron and Mason Kolls won four games before falling to John Falke and Roberto Puig.

In singles, Strause nearly matched Macy's three-set winner with a marathon of his own at No. 2 against Falke. He finished out a tight loss 6-7 (6), 6-4, 10-4.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday at Noon as they host Washington College (Md.).
