NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team bounced back for a 6-3 win over Washington College (Md.) on Sunday, winning two matches in doubles and four in singles play to pull away from the Shoremen (5-4). The Captains improved to 7-4 on the season with the win, led by
Alec Strause,
Ahun Vodela, and
Matthew Dubuque.
Strause paired with
Ryan Macy for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles before also capturing the singles win at No. 2 over Landon Strober. Strause captured a 6-2, 6-4 win in that match as the Captains inched closer to clinching.
Also picking up a pair of wins were Vodela and Dubuque, paired up at No. 3 doubles where CNU snared an 8-6 win over Ryohei Kawai and Andrew Province. At No. 4 singles, Vodela defeated Koby Bonta, 6-4, 7-5, to finish out his two-win performance while Dubuque won at No. 6, 6-3, 7-5.
Rounding out the wins for CNU on Sunday was
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen at No. 3 singles. Taking on Kawai, Hansen cruised by his Shoreman counterpart by a final score of 6-2, 6-1.
Christopher Newport opens a tough portion of the schedule with three straight matches against nationally-ranked opponents on March 26 as they travel to No. 6 Johns Hopkins. Following the bout with the Blue Jays, CNU will face No. 38 Swarthmore and No. 20 Mary Washington on the road.
