NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Facing another top-20 test, the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will square off with No. 16 Williams during a non-conference showdown at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the midweek battle, the Captains sit at 11-0 on the season, including 6-0 at home. Meanwhile, Williams is 4-2 overall and 2-1 on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the contest with Will Geise and Randy Foster calling all of the action. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Wednesday's game will mark the fifth top-20 test of the season for Christopher Newport. So far this year, the Captains have upended No. 7 Lynchburg, No. 10 Gettysburg, No. 19 Ursinus, and No. 20 Hampden-Sydney. The four victories over nationally-ranked opponents already ranks as the most in a single season in program history, topping the three triumphs over top-20 foes last year.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 21-6 victory over Whittier on Sunday. Against the Poets,
Dylan Rice tied the single-game program record with 10 points after landing four goals and six assists. His final tally also marked his 300th career point, making him one of just five active players at any level of the NCAA to reach that milestone.
Along with Rice,
Brady Altobello snapped off four goals, including the 103rd of his career. That moved him past former All-American Randy Foster for the most goals by a midfielder in program history. Overall, Altobello has now registered at least one point in 34 consecutive games, which is one shy of the school record set by current teammate
Will Stockhausen from April 14, 2018 through March 13, 2021.
Adding his own historic note to Sunday's game,
Phoenix Hines collected his 200th career ground ball. He joined former legends Ari Elgort, Tony Cruz, and Teddy Pekalski as the only players in program history to reach that mark.
Overall this season, Hines and
Max Wayne are tied for second in the nation with 33 takeaways, while Rice is second in the NCAA with 66 points.
Coby Auslander is also third in the country with 33 assists.
As a team, Christopher Newport continues to rank among the national leaders in a variety of categories. The Captains are first in the country in takeaways per game (17.45), while they sit eighth in scoring offense (19.00 goals per game). The squad has also limited its opposition to a .665 clearing percentage, which stands as the ninth-best mark in the NCAA.
Williams provides an exciting challenge for Christopher Newport as the Ephs have converted 91.5 percent of their clears, which stands as the second-best rate in the country. The squad is also 24th in the NCAA in man-up offense (.455) and 26th in man-down defense (.818). Overall, the team enters Wednesday on a three-game winning streak, including a 12-9 triumph at No. 15 RPI on March 23.
On an individual level, Jake Haase leads Williams with 26 points and boasts a .545 shooting percentage, which ranks 12th in the NCAA. Calvin Caputo also has 15 goals while converting at a .536 clip, which slots him 15th in the country. Meanwhile, Noah Dewbrey has won 51 of his 110 faceoffs this season, and Matt Freltas has a .581 save percentage and 10.33 goals-against-average.
Wednesday's game will mark the first-ever meeting between the Ephs and Captains.
Following the midweek tilt, Christopher Newport will return to action on April 6 for a 5 p.m. game at Southern Virginia.
