NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will wrap up a brief two-game homestand on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains welcome Roanoke to town for a non-conference battle at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport sits at 4-4 on the season, including 3-2 at home. Meanwhile, Roanoke is 4-2 overall and 3-1 on the road.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 19-16 triumph over Randolph-Macon on Wednesday. Against the Yellow Jackets,
Syd Guidi paced the squad with a dominant performance all over the field. The second-year star registered a career-high eight points, including six goals. She also added a team-high eight draw controls.
With that well-rounded showcase, Guidi became just the second player in program history to collect at least eight draws and eight points in a single game. Previously, only Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Kaitlin Quigley had accomplished that feat after she recorded 10 draws and nine points against Mary Washington on April 6, 2011.
Along with Guidi's historic showcase,
Kelsey Winters added seven points, including five assists.
Zoe Dyer also contributed four strikes,
Alexis Kasuda added a hat-trick, and
Emma Jackson led the defense with four takeaways. Meanwhile,
Lizzie Burgoyne picked up her first collegiate victory after making four saves during her time in the crease.
Overall this season, Winters ranks fourth in the NCAA with 38 assists. Incredibly, she not only leads the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference in that category, but she has 29 more helpers than any other player in the league and 13 more than the entire Mary Washington roster combined.
Aided by Winters' work on the offensive side, Christopher Newport has continued to feature one of the most efficient attacks in the NCAA. The Captains currently rank fourth in the country in free-position percentage (.654) and 16th in shooting percentage (.514). Among the individual standouts, Winters is a perfect 7-for-7 on her eight-meter attempts, while
Blake Hopkins boasts a .714 shooting percentage after converting five of her seven total shots into goals.
Roanoke comes into Saturday after knocking off Lynchburg, 10-8, during a league bout on Thursday. Against the Hornets, the Maroons overcame a fourth-quarter deficit by scoring the game's final three goals, including a pair of Grace Koutouzis. Lilly Blair also added four tallies for the victors, and Kyleigh Chickering contributed 11 saves.
Overall this season, Blair ranks 39th in the NCAA in points-per-game (5.75) and 43rd in goals-per-contest (4.25). Roanoke has also averaged only 13.25 turnovers per game, which stands as the 22nd-best rate in the nation. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Blair also leads the squad with 10 takeaways, and Chickering has compiled a .474 save percentage and 8.51 goals-against-average.
In 17 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 9-8 edge in the series. Last year, Roanoke came away with a 15-10 triumph in Salem. Winters had four points, including three assists, during that battle, while Emerson Foster had six goals and 10 draw controls for the Maroons.
Following Saturday's tilt, the Captains will hit the road for a midweek match-up at Lynchburg on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.
