John Krikorian's squad is making its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA tourney, and the eighth in 11 years since Krikorian took over the program. This will be the 25th all-time appearance for the Captains in the NCAA's. CNU has advanced to the national semifinals twice, playing in Salem, Va., in the 2015-16 season and Fort Wayne, Ind., to conclude the 2018-19 campaign. Christopher Newport has an all-time record of 24-24 in NCAA play heading into Friday's action.
Baruch, located in Manhattan, is 20-7 this year and won the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) title by beating Lehman College. Rowan, 23-5 and a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference, received an at large bid to the tournament. Susquehanna is 23-4 and captured the Landmark Conference title.
The Captains are led by Coast-To-Coast Player of the Year
Jahn Hines, who scored 22 points and pulled down 14 rebounds last Saturday in the Coast-To-Coast Conference Tournament title game against Mary Washington. Hines was chosen the MVP of the conference tournament, and was joined on the All-Tournament squad by senior
Darian Peterson, who was a second team All-Conference selection, and sophomore
Trey Barber, who was voted the C2C's Defensive Player of the Year this season. CNU has not lost a game since November 21st at Lynchburg, and the Captains began their winning streak six days later with a home triumph over Alvernia.
All Captains games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning Friday at 7:10 p.m.
