NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University had another big day at the plate and in the pitching circle Monday, shutting out Juniata College by scores of 10-0 and 14-0. Both games of the doubleheader at Captains Park were shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
Keith Parr's squad improved to 15-0 to start the season as the ninth-ranked Captains scored 24 runs on 22 base hits in the twin bill. CNU blew open both games in the second inning, scoring eight runs in the second frame of the opening game, and six in the second in the nightcap.
Christopher Newport crushed four home runs in the doubleheader, two in each game. Senior
Sarah Proctor opened the scoring in the second inning of the opener with a two-run shot, her fourth round-tripper of the season. The shot to center field opened the deluge of eight runs scored in the frame, and the big inning concluded with a two-run blast off the bat of senior
Kaitlyn Hasty. The home run was Hasty's ninth of the season, and ties her with Jessie Atkinson for the all-time home run lead in program history.
Freshman pitcher
Olivia Kim tossed all five innings for the Captains, shutting out the Eagles and giving up just two hits and one walk. She improved her record to 3-0 on the season.
The nightcap saw the Captains jump to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning before plating six in the second. Junior catcher
Bailey Roberts provided the big hit with a two-run homer in the first, her fourth dinger of the year. Sophomore
Brooke Greaver came to the plate in the second with the bases full, and doubled to right-center field to score three. Hasty brought home two more with a two-run double in the third, and freshman
McKenzie Presson concluded the scoring with a three-run home run in the fourth, her second of the year.
Junior
Abby Rochette pitched the first three innings of scoreless ball to earn the victory and improve to 3-0. Rochette struck out seven, and freshman
Jamie Martin and
Kate Alger each pitched an inning of scoreless relief to preserve the shutout.
The victories over the Eagles dropped Juniata to 1-7 on the year. The teams met on Friday at Captains Park, and Christopher Newport recorded a 15-0 triumph.
The Captains have now scored 174 runs this year in 15 games (11.6 runs per game). CNU has also posted 32 home runs in the 15-0 start. The pitching staff has not allowed a run over the last 25 innings of work, and has now shut out opposing teams in eight of 15 games, including the last five. Â
Christopher Newport will host Lynchburg for two games on Wednesday afternoon at Captains Park. The starting time for game one is set for 2:00 p.m.
