NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Kicking off the spring portion of the schedule against regional rival Washington and Lee at the James River Country Club, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team swept doubles play and won three more matches in individual action to capture a 6-3 win over the Generals on Saturday afternoon. The Captains (1-0) got multiple victories from Ryan Macy, Ahun Vodela, and Eddy Porsmyr Hansen

The bout featured two of the top-30 teams in the nation according to the final ITA rankings of 2021 with Christopher Newport ranked No. 29 and Washington and Lee a top-25 team at No. 25 in the nation. The Captains earned the team's fourth win in the last five matchups against the Generals.

In doubles action, Ryan Macy and Alec Strause paired up for an 8-4 win against T.J. Rudden and Eli Hirshberg on the top line. Winning by the same score at No. 2, newcomer Ahun Vodela played with Bently Goodwin for the victory against Will Kistler and James Kurani. Rounding out the doubles sweep at No. 3 was Matthew Dubuque and Eddy Porsmyr Hansen with an 8-6 final against Connor Coleman and Evan Brady.

The Captains carried that momentum into singles play where they would quickly clinch the match with wins in two of the first three matchups. Macy won at No. 2 in straight sets against Hirshberg (6-4, 6-3) and Porsmyr Hansen sealed the Captains win with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Rudden. The Generals would snag three of the remaining four singles wins but the lead was already insurmountable. In the No. 4 battle, Vodela earned his first collegiate victory in singles play to wrap up a strong debut in the Royal Blue and Silver. He downed Coleman in straight sets (6-4, 6-4), to round out the scoring for Christopher Newport.
