NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Capturing the team's first shutout victory since March 13, 2021, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team cruised past Virginia Wesleyan University (0-1) at the James T. & Sarah C. Eyre Courts on Friday afternoon, 9-0. The Captains improved to 2-0 with the win and extended the team's win streak over the Marlins to 13 consecutive matches dating back to the 2004-05 season.

Matthew Dubuque secured the match-clinching win at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Henry West. Dubuque also paired with sophomore
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen for a shutout win at No. 3 doubles, 8-0, against Francis Cabaddu and Camden Perry.
Dubuque was one of five Captains to win in both singles and doubles while
Tyler Hyun stepped in for the sixth singles win and
Bently Goodwin was the additional Captain in pairs play. Goodwin improved to 2-0 with newcomer
Ahun Vodela with an 8-6 win over West and Timothy Tep at No. 2 singles while Hyun slid in at No. 6 singles for a 6-3, 6-0 win over Perry in individual play.
Alec Strause, regionally ranked in singles action, earned his first win of the Spring with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Felix Bvec while also capturing a No. 1 doubles win with
Ryan Macy. Macy squeezed out the win at No. 2 over Mitchell Perry with a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0 (5) finish after earning an 8-2 win with Strause over Perry and Bvec at No. 1.
The last two singles victories for CNU came from Porsmyr Hansen and Vodela. Both won in straight sets at lines 3 and 4, respectively.
The Captains will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to North Carolina Wesleyan to face Southwestern University in a neutral court battle on Sunday, February 13. The match will begin at 11:00 am against the Pirates.
