Kelsey Winters Breaks Single-Game Points Record while Leading No. 24 Christopher Newport Women's Lacrosse to 18-11 Win over Moravian

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Piecing together a historic appearance during the squad's home opener on Saturday afternoon, Kelsey Winters established a new single-game program record with 13 points while leading the 24th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team to an 18-11 victory over Moravian at Jennings Family Stadium.

Against the Greyhounds, Winters torched the opposition with a relentless assault. Her 13 total points broke the previous school record of 12, which she tied in the season opener last Friday at Virginia Wesleyan. Along with Winters, Christopher Newport Hall of Famers Meghan Harkey and Ashton Marshall both had 12-point outings during their decorated careers.

Picking apart the defense during a 60-minute masterpiece, Winters dished out 10 assists, which matched the school record set by Harkey against Agnes Scott on April 3, 2010. Saturday's game also marked her 17th consecutive appearance with at least one assist dating back to March 10, 2020. That stands as the longest streak in program history, topping Harkey's run of 16 straight games with an assist from May 6, 2009 through April 20, 2010.

Along with Winters' work, Emma Jackson collected 12 draw controls, which fell just one shy of the program record set by Meaghan Galvin against Southern Virginia on March 23, 2017 and equaled by Sam Wettengel against Salisbury on April 14, 2021. Meanwhile, Madi Rozgonyi registered five takeaways, which tied the eighth-highest total in school history. It also fell one shy of the freshman record set by Sally Allstadt against Averett on March 29, 2003 and matched by Victoria Betterly against Scranton on March 16, 2019.

In addition to the history-makers, Zoe Dyer added six tallies for the Captains, while Sloane McDonald contributed five goals and five ground balls. With that performance, she became the first Captain with at least five strikes and five rollers in the same game since Ashton Marshall accomplished the feat at St. Mary's (Md.) on February 27, 2013.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 2-0 on the season. The win also marks the program's 100th home triumph in school history. Meanwhile, the setback drops Moravian to 0-2.

Kicking things off, Winters dropped a pair of assists to McDonald and Dyer, who quickly capitalized and secured a fast 2-0 lead. Although Moravian battled back and tied the score later in the opening quarter, Christopher Newport unloaded over the final four minutes of the period.

Breaking the deadlock, Winters found McDonald for back-to-back strikes, including a fancy feed that saw her draw the attention of two defenders before slipping the ball to her teammate, who found some room to work in the vacated zone. Moments later, Dyer stretched the lead to 6-2 with two straight daggers, which punctuated the opening period.

In the second stanza, Dyer flashed her passing skills. The senior backed her way inside the zone while dodging a defender. Although the Greyhound stayed on her hip, she eventually dished over the top to Blake Hopkins, who punched home her first goal of the game to snatch a 7-2 edge.

After Syd Guidi added a rocket on the run in the 19th minute, Moravian responded on the other end with two straight tallies. Unfazed by the resurgence, Winters took control again. The All-American set up back-to-back darts by Dyer and Kendall Krause during a two-minute surge, which helped the hosts pull out to a 10-4 edge.

Staring at a six-goal deficit, the Greyhounds began clawing back into the game. Moravian finished off the first half with a late goal before scoring four of the first five strikes in the third period. Needing an answer to quell the comeback, Winters took over again.

In the final minute of the third quarter, Winters found the back of the net on two straight possessions. First, she secured a feed from Dyer and cut around a pair of defenders before depositing on the interior. Seconds later, she tormented a Greyhound behind the cage with an incredible cutback before spinning around the left pipe for her third tally of the game, which handed the hosts a 13-9 lead entering the final quarter.

Needing three points for the single-game record, Winters quickly went to work in the fourth period. She handed out back-to-back helpers to Dyer and McDonald, which pushed the squad's advantage to 15-9. Although the Greyhounds cut their deficit back down to four midway through the quarter, Christopher Newport eased into the victory.

In the final two minutes, Guidi added a laser to kick off the final push before Winters returned with one more highlight after teaming up with Dyer on a gorgeous give-and go. After securing possession on the left side of the field, Dyer fed the ball back to Winters before barreling her way towards the crease. With a defender in her face, Winters lofted a pinpoint rainbow over the Greyhound, which Dyer quickly caught and converted into her sixth goal. It also polished off Winters' record-setting 13-point performance.

With little left to prove, McDonald added a fitting punctuation mark with a rip from the left side in the final seconds to lock up the 18-11 victory.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 35-22 advantage in shots and controlled 21 of the game's 33 draws. Along with Jackson's 12 draw controls, Hopkins added five. Meanwhile, Eleanor Collins also contributed two, while Riley Rafterry-Lee came through with three ground balls and a takeaway. Izzy Shefrin collected five saves to earn her second straight victory as well.

Christopher Newport will return to action on March 5 when the squad hosts Kean at 1 p.m.
