Well-Balanced Attack Leads No. 23 Christopher Newport Women's Lacrosse Past Kean, 20-6

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Six Captains registered multi-goal efforts, while three contributed hat-tricks, as the 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team dominated Kean, 20-6, during a non-conference test on a splendid Saturday afternoon at Jennings Family Stadium.

Continuing her hot start to the 2022 campaign, junior Kelsey Winters posted 10 points, which equaled the 10th-highest total by a Captain. Incredibly, in the illustrious history of the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse program, there have only been 17 games in which an individual player recorded at least 10 points. Winters has three of those outings this season, including her record-setting 13-point showcase against Moravian last Saturday.

Putting her complete arsenal on full display, Winters posted a season-high four goals against the Cougars while also adding six assists. Her six helpers matched the eighth-highest total by a Captain.

Along with Winters, Kendall Krause erupted for a career-high seven points, including five goals. Syd Guidi also set a new personal benchmark with four strikes, while Blake Hopkins contributed her first collegiate hat-trick.

Christopher Newport was especially lethal from the eight-meter arc as the Captains deposited six free-position strikes against the Cougars. That tied the third most in program history.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 3-0 on the season, while the setback drops Kean to 0-2.

Just 20 seconds into regulation, the Captains set the tone as Winters found Krause cutting towards the crease for the game's first tally. Later, after Riley Rafterry-Lee put an end to Kean's first offensive possession with a takeaway along the left post, Christopher Newport unleashed a barrage on the other end of the field.

Winters and Krause kicked off the attack with back-to-back free-position goals. Shortly thereafter, Winters set up two straight darts by Hopkins and Krause before Guidi joined the fun with a laser off a feed from Alexis Kasuda.

Holding a 6-0 lead less than five minutes into regulation, Christopher Newport continued to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard. Izzy Shefrin helped wall off the cage, while Emma Jackson and Joely Stevens snagged ground balls to hand possession back to the attack.

Following the defensive stand, the offense continued to shine. With six minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Captains sent a parade of cutters towards the cage before Winters connected with Kasuda, who pounded home her first tally. Later, Winters and Zoe Dyer also found the back of the cage before Guidi and Kasuda snapped off eight-meter missiles to secure an 11-0 lead entering the second stanza.

Continuing to shine all over the field, Krause forced a turnover on Kean's first possession of the period, while Shefrin made a fantastic save on a free-position attempt. Meanwhile, on the other end of the turf, Hopkins and Krause continued the offensive heroics with a pair of goals to grab a 13-2 edge entering halftime.

Following the break, Christopher Newport orchestrated its finest defensive stand of the game. Pushing back against a talented Kean attack, the Captains withstood a lengthy surge early in the third period. Madi Rozgonyi stuck to the hip of an attacker and rode her around the back of the crease. Later, Krause used relentless pressure to dislodge the ball from a Cougar's stick on the left side of the field before Shefrin slammed the door on another eight-meter attempt.

Minutes later, Maddie Rusinko also came through with a huge check behind the cage to strip an attacker before Shefrin pounced on the roller and jump-started a quick clear, which ended with Guidi's third goal of the game.

Meanwhile, Krause also added her fifth tally before assisting on a dagger by Dyer, which locked down a 17-4 edge entering the final stanza.

With time winding down, Winters flashed her finishing skills with two goals in the fourth quarter, while Guidi tacked on the squad's sixth free-position strike after Kean was hit with a card. Lizzie Burgoyne also brushed aside an eight-meter rip after taking over between the pipes, and Hopkins clamped down on the visitor's final clear attempt, which helped punctuate the 20-6 victory.

During the game, Christopher Newport held a 26-20 advantage in shots and a 15-4 lead in ground balls. Jackson, Stevens, Krause, and Rafterry-Lee all had two rollers apiece, while Shefrin finished with six saves between the pipes. Meanwhile, Jackson also added a team-high five draw controls, and Eleanor Collins came through with three of her own.

The Captains will return to action on Wednesday when the squad hosts Haverford at 7:00 p.m.
