Rookie Raine Weis Takes Down Nationally Ranked Singles Opponent as Captains Fall, 7-2, at Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss on the road Friday afternoon, falling at national power Washington and Lee University (3-0). Rookie Raine Weis scored one of the biggest wins of her young career when she outlasted No. 11 Gabi Moss at No. 2 singles for one of the Captains' two team points in the match.

Weis took her second top-15 ranked opponent to three sets on route to her sixth career victory on Friday afternoon. In the fall, Weis stretched now No. 3 Crystal Zhou (Carnegie Mellon) to three sets in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships before falling to the Tartan opponent. In Friday's bout, the Ashland, Va. native took on Moss, ranked 11th in the ITA Singles Rankings released on December 9.

Weis took the first set against the Generals' sophomore, 7-5 before the home court held in the second, 6-3. In the deciding third set tiebreaker, CNU's rookie battled back and forth against Moss before finally securing the win, 10-8.

The win improved Weis to 3-0 in dual play so far this season with a pair of wins against Division I opponents.

The other CNU point came at No. 3 singles where Kiersten Chang also continued her strong start to the dual season with a straight set victory over Marta Mikos. Chang finished her match dropping just four games with a 6-1, 6-3 win for the Captains.

While the score finished out at 7-2, the Captains battled across the board against the Generals. In doubles play, the No. 1 line was decided by just two, 8-6, while CNU scored nine game wins on lines two and three. In the No. 6 singles bout, Karina Crivtonencu sprinted past Kaitlyn Chalker in the first set, 6-1, but narrowly missed the win in a 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 final. The Generals were ranked No. 9 in the final ITA Rankings of 2020-21.

The Captains, now 1-2 on the season, will return to action on Saturday as they face Sewanee in a neutral court bout on the campus of Washington and Lee.
