LEXINGTON, Va. -- Facing a University of the South squad that finished the 2021 season ranked No. 6 in the nation, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback on a neutral court Saturday afternoon. The Captains fall to 1-3 on the season with the loss while Sewanee improved to 2-0.
The Captains fell behind, 3-0, after doubles and battled through singles play before falling to the 2021 national quarterfinalists.
Raine Weis suffered her first collegiate loss in dual action with a 6-3, 7-5 setback to Alice Hall on the No. 2 singles line. Nationally-ranked
Tessa Trate snagged six games against fellow-ranked opponent Brooke Despriet, before falling to the Tigers' top player 6-2, 6-4. Despriet was ranked No. 46 in the national singles rankings released in December.
Kiersten Chang and
Kendra Womack each won three games apiece in singles play, falling to their counterparts by matching 6-2, 6-1 scores.
Karina Crivtonencu was charged with playing regionally-ranked Sarah Livingston at No. 4 and suffered a 6-1, 6-0 setback.
Christopher Newport will return to action in Orlando, Florida from March 7-9 when they will take on Wesleyan, Carnegie Mellon, and RPI over a three-day stretch.
