Fourth-Ranked Captains Conclude Regular Season With Saturday Matinee at Mary Washington

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Riding an 18-game winning streak, the Christopher Newport men's basketball team heads to Fredericksburg Saturday to take on the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Ron Rosner Arena at the Anderson Center.

John Krikorian's team is ranked fourth in the country for the third straight week this week, and is 21-2 heading into the regular season finale. Mary Washington is 15-7 and the Eagles have dropped their last three games, including a 78-71 loss to the Captains at the Freeman Center on February 9th.

The Captains are led by sophomore Jahn Hines, who this week was selected the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season. Hines is averaging 15.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, and recorded a career-high 26 points in the first meeting with the Eagles. Senior Darian Peterson has registered double-doubles in each of the last four games for CNU, and is now averaging 9.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest. Fifth-year senior Jason Aigner is coming off a 23-point performance last Saturday in the Captains' victory over Salisbury at the Freeman Center, and is 12th on the school's all-time scoring list.

Christopher Newport's 18-game winning streak began on November 27th with a home victory over Alvernia. The Captains last lost on November 21 at Lynchburg.

Mary Washington and CNU will be meeting for the 40th time in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 32-7 advantage. CNU has won the last four games, and 13 of the last 14 over the Eagles dating back to January of 2015.

Following Saturday's regular-season finale, the Captains will host the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament next weekend at the Freeman Center. Action begins on Thursday, February 24, when the 4th-seed will play the 5th-seed in a 5:00 p.m. quarterfinal. The semifinals will be played on Friday, February 25, with games at 5:00 p.m. (Top-seed vs. 4/5 winner) and 7:30 p.m. (2nd-seed vs. 3rd-seed). The Championship game will take place next Saturday, February 26, with start time set for 7:00 p.m.
