NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team opened the spring dual season against Division I George Mason University (2-1) on Saturday, falling to the Patriots in a 6-3 final. The Captains (0-1) earned one doubles victory and a pair in singles play.
In doubles action, newcomer
Raine Weis paired with sophomore
Tessa Trate for an 8-3 win on the top line. The CNU duo took down Savanna Crowell and Francesca Trella in No.1 doubles to get the Captains on the board.
Playing at the James River CC, the Captains suffered an 8-2 loss at No. 2 and an 8-0 setback at No. 3 doubles to fall behind, 2-1.
In singles play, Weis capped an impressive collegiate dual debut with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Brianna Gibbs. She was the lone Captain to win in both singles and doubles on Saturday.
The final point for CNU came at No. 5 singles where sophomore
Kiersten Chang stepped in for a 7-5, 7-5 win over Jackie Nannery.
On the top line, Trate gave Paige La everything she could handle before falling 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5).
The Captains will take on another Division I opponent on Sunday when they host Hampton University.
