NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taking on their second Division I opponent in as many days, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team drew even with a 1-1 overall record after a 9-0 shutout over the Hampton University Pirates (0-1) on Sunday afternoon.
The Captains rushed past the Pirates for their first win of the 2022 campaign. CNU swept doubles play and won four singles bouts in straight sets.
Tessa Trate,
Raine Weis,
Kiersten Chang, and Mia Lanam each won in both pairs and individual play.
In doubles action, Trate and Weis teamed up for an 8-3 win on the top line against Milena Amedieva and Laura Peralta. Linam paired with
Amanda Yermal for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles against Viktoria Ljungman and Franzene Tsui while
Anna Campbell and Chang won by the same score at No. 3 against Keri Quillin and Zoe Walker.
After moving to singles action, the Captains quickly clinched the match with the first two bouts. Trate's opponent at No. 1, Amedieva, retired down 6-3, 1-0 and Weis earned the deciding point with a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (4) finish at No. 2 over Peralta.
Chang defeated Ljungman at No. 3 (6-4, 6-0) and Linam won a marathon at No. 4 (6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (9)) to finish out their 2-0 performances. On lines 5 and 6, a pair of Captains stepped in to win in straight sets. First,
Kendra Womack secured a 6-3, 6-1 win against Tsui followed by a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Quillin for sophomore
Karina Crivtonencu.
CNU will return to action on Friday, February 18 as they travel to Washington and Lee University for their first road trip this season.
