NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team returns to action this weekend with a pair of matches including the first outdoor home dual on Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm. The Captains will take on Virginia Wesleyan on the James T. and Sarah C. Eyre Courts Friday before traveling to Rocky Mount, N.C. to face off against Southwestern University out of Texas in a neutral court battle on Sunday.
CNU opened the season with a 6-3 win over Washington & Lee on February 5 and will take on their cross-water rivals for the Marlins' season opener on Friday. On Sunday, the Captains will travel to N.C. Wesleyan College to take on Southwestern, who is 0-1 to start the year. The Pirates dropped a 7-0 decision to Texas-Tyler last weekend and will face off against the host Battling Bishops on Saturday.
In the season opener, the Captains swept doubles play against Washington & Lee with
Ryan Macy and
Alec Strause pairing up for the win at No. 1. Macy also went on to win at No. 2 singles to highlight a group of three Captains who won in both singles and doubles. Newcomer
Ahun Vodela paired with
Bently Goodwin at No. 2 doubles and earned the win at No. 4 singles while sophomore
Eddy Porsmyr Hansen won at No. 3 doubles and No. 3 singles.
CNU owns a 50-10 advantage in the all-time series against Virginia Wesleyan and will be facing Southwestern for the first time in program history.
Following the weekend, CNU will return to action next weekend against Hampden-Sydney and Averett at home.
