NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following an eight-day break for final exams, the Christopher Newport University men's basketball squad heads back into action on Sunday. The Captains, 8-0 and top-ranked in the country for the second straight week, host the Saints of Marymount University (4-5) with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
John Krikorian's squad last played on Saturday, December 3rd, defeating Averett University in Danville, 71-54. The Captains were again led by junior guard
Jahn Hines, who was chosen the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his efforts. Hines scored 24 points as he helped lead the Captains to their eighth straight victory to open the season. The Norfolk native is now averaging 18.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game this season.
Marymount enters Sunday's battle with a 4-5 record and the Saints are coming off a 70-66 victory Wednesday at Dickinson University in Carlisle, Pa. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Saints, who opened the season with three consecutive victories. Sunday's game will be the 28th in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 23-4 advantage and have won the last two games over the Saints. Last season, the squads met on January 8, 2022, at Converse Fieldhouse in Arlington, Va., and CNU came away with a convincing 91-66 victory fueled by 23 points from Hines..Â
