The Captains lost a five set match to UC Santa Cruz on Saturday in the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament third-place match.
First Set (Captains 25-23)
CNU tied the score at 20 with a kill from
Alyssa Dozier. Two errors from UCSC and a kill from
Kyla McIntyre accounted for four straight points for the Captains. Another kill from McIntyre helped Christopher Newport finish off the first set in their favor.
Second Set (Captains 25-20)
Christopher Newport scored the first four points of the second set, and seven of the first nine. The Captains totaled 16 kills in this set, the most of the match.
Mackenzie Wright and
Kyla McIntyre each accounted for four kills as the Captains fought off a late Santa Cruz comeback to claim the second set.
Third Set (UC Santa Cruz 25-19)
Six straight UCSC points cost the Captains their lead, but they managed to tie the score at 14 with four straight points of their own. Santa Cruz responded by taking six of the next eight points, but again, CNU battled back to cut the UCSC lead to 21-19 and forced a timeout. Out of the timeout, Santa Cruz got things together and won the final four points to win their first set of the match.
Fourth Set (UC Santa Cruz 25-21)
The Captains overcame an early deficit to take a 14-13 lead, but Santa Cruz rallied to retake the lead and held a 22-16 advantage late in the fourth set. A kill from
Macy Burk and an ace from
Rebecca Frey were followed by two UCSC errors as CNU cut the lead to just two. But Santa Cruz held off the Captains and scored three of the final four points to force a deciding fifth set.
Fifth Set (UC Santa Cruz 15-11)
Santa Cruz scored the first four points, but kills from
Maddie Carter,
Macy Burk, and
Kyla McIntyre helped CNU battle back and tie the score at eight. A kill from
Mackenzie Wright and two from Carter helped the Captains keep pace with Santa Cruz, but UCSC ultimately took the final three points to win the set and match.
