NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 2022 Christopher Newport University home regular-season football schedule concludes Saturday afternoon, as the Captains host the Lions of the College of New Jersey (TCNJ). Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium.
The Captains (6-2, 4-0) are riding a five-game winning streak, and
Paul Crowley's team is currently tied atop the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings with Salisbury at 4-0. TCNJ enters Saturday's game with a record of 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the league.
CNU traveled to Montclair, New Jersey, last Saturday and recorded a 14-13 victory over Montclair State University. "It was another hard-fought win," Crowley said. "They're physical like all NJAC squads, and we had to rise to the occasion to hang on for the win. This week will be similar, and I expect TCNJ to give us a great challenge."
Saturday will be Senior Day at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. A dozen Captains will be recognized prior to kickoff as they prepare to play for the final time in the regular season at home.Â
"Senior Days are always emotional," Crowley continued. "We've got a great group that has contributed so much to the program over the years. I'm proud to say that they're the first senior class of my head coaching career."
CNU and TCNJ have played six times in the past, and the Captains hold a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series. Christopher Newport has won the last three meetings including a 21-14 victory last season in Ewing, N.J. The Lions are coming off a 33-2 victory last week at William Paterson, a game that saw TCNJ's defense hold the Pioneers without a first down all afternoon.
Tickets for the game will be available at the gate prior to kickoff. The stadium gates will open to fans at 12 noon. All Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be streamed live on CNUsports.com, and can be seen by clicking the link at the top of this story. Live stats can also be accessed by clicking the link above.
Saturday's forecast is calling for lots of sunshine and temperatures reaching the mid '70's. Christopher Newport concludes the regular season next week at Salisbury University in what will likely boil down to the NJAC Championship game. Salisbury plays at Kean University on Saturday, alo in a 1:00 p.m. start.
