CNU Men's Soccer Vaults to No. 12 in United Soccer Coaches Top 25; Captains Named Top Seed in C2C Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After ending the regular season with a resounding 3-0 win in the finale against Salisbury last week, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team made a dramatic leap to No. 12 in the United Soccer Coaches national rankings ahead of being named the top seed in this week's Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. The Captains improved to 11-3-1 at the conclusion of regular season play and are also ranked No. 17 in the D3soccer.com Top 25.

The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference announced the seedings for the annual championship tournament which will be held at Salisbury University, listing the Captains as the regular season champions and #1 seed. Mary Washington secured the #2 seed and earned a first-round bye alongside the Captains in the tournament. In Thursday's opening round matchups, #3 UW-Platteville will take on host and #6-seed Salisbury while #4 UW-Whitewater faces #5 UC Santa Cruz. The semifinal matchups will then be played on Friday, November 4 at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, with Christopher Newport taking on the winner of the Whitewater/Santa Cruz bout in the first game.

This week, Christopher Newport hauled in its highest national ranking of the season with the recognition at No. 12. It represented a 13-place move in the overall rankings, easily the largest jump for Top 25 teams this week.

The Captains rank seventh nationally in shutout percentage (.667) and in the top-25 in team goals-against average (0.675) this season. The defense has led head coach Justin Chezem and the Captains to one of the best regular seasons in program history with 10 shutouts in 15 games played.

Live stats and live video courtesy of the Salisbury University Department of Athletics will be available for all the C2C Tournament action this weekend. Links to both can be found on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
